Marc and Luke Top Tens at IRONMAN 70.3 Happy Valley North American Champs

Nick Chase’s ears were ringing when Marc Dubrick claimed that the Happy Valley course is “much better than St George, [and] the road conditions were the best by far of any 70.3 in the US.”

“It was nice to have a non-wetsuit swim for a change,” Marc said after placing 5th at the North American Championship on June 14. “Net uphill bike and the last 10 miles were really tricky and a difficult run to finish it off.” Marc had a stellar bike leg, joining Sam Long, Trevor Foley, and Justin Riele when they rode by. “I committed no matter what and I’m so happy with that,” Marc wrote.

TBD if Marc is wearing pants.

Luke Jones was 8th at the same race, which went toward his RTS engagement💍with Margarita Ryan. It also moves him up to 82nd in the PTO Rankings and 70th in the PTN Rankings. (Editor note: No ranking system is perfect, so going forward I will choose the ranking system that is the highest 😉)

An Intra-squad Battle for 3rd at IRONMAN 70.3 Mont Tremblant 70.3 and Lisa & Luke’s First IRONMAN podium!

Lisa Becharas and Luke Jones had career highlight days with their first 70.3 podiums on June 21st at the IRONMAN 70.3 Mont Tremblant.

Lisa made her way up to first on the bike course, exchanging leads with eventual winner Aurélia Bolanger. "I was just trying to ride the course to the best of my abilities - conserve when I can and push the hills! I really went into this race thinking I would run 1:40+ off the bike because of how little run training I had under my belt!” (Editor note: Lisa ran a 1:28(!). Leading up to the race, she was focused on TT Nationals and did a ton of VO2 work, something she talks about more in depth on last week’s podcast - listen on YouTube, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts.)

“The run was so beautiful - challenging with some good rolling hills, but we had beautiful weather!”" - Lisa

Lisa was second off the bike and later caught on the run by only Lydia Russell, securing her first ever IRONMAN 70.3 podium! “I definitely punched above my fitness level that day!”

Emma Skaug was 13th (and 3rd female Canadian!) and Danae Morris was 21st, with Margarita Ryan placing 18th and the fastest out of the water by over 30 seconds.

Lisa was motivated to run away from convicted doper / Lance look-alike.

Another RTS podium was certain in the final 5K, but it was not at all sure if it would be Luke Jones or David Reynolds. “I knew he was a fast runner and that we might be racing to the line!" Luke said of David. At the run turnaround halfway, Luke nearly conceded. “I thought I was a goner, but I picked up the pace a tiny bit. I looked back 5K later and he was right behind me 🥲.”

When David Reynolds was running in 4th place with Luke in sight, he got the gap down to 10 seconds around mile 10 before Luke started to pick it up. “I was just focusing on trying to keep the pressure on hoping he would crack eventually.”

Luke Jones with now-fiancée Margarita Ryan

It turns out, David has been in this situation with Luke before.

“My thought was if I caught [him], I wanted to pass and drop and didn’t want to run with him, but around the final mile he found another gear and pulled clear from me with a solid surge that I just couldn’t match at that point in the race.”

Luke responded and “proceeded to dig the deepest I ever had in a race because I really wanted my first podium and ran the fastest 5K I ever have to close it out. He pushed me to the max!”

Both Luke and David felt a lot of RTS energy (which was six pros deep!) at Mont Tremblant before and after the race, but “everyone on the run was too busy battling to cheer each other on 😂,” per Luke, while David “tried to wave to every RTS kit I saw.”

Luke is the one in white calf sleeves and a pink/white jersey with the flowers, and, ok he’s the one with the M5 bib.

America’s Cup Montreal

Coming off her win at the race named in her honor (the St. Anthony’s/Annie’s Triathlon), Annie Fuller won the America’s Cup Montreal on June 25th. Emma Elliott was 25th. Annie was too busy wedding planning to be reached for comment 👰😉.

From the Lead Swim to the Late Moves: How Fog, Fitness, and a Poorly Timed Stingray Headlined the Oceanside 70.3

The IRONMAN Pro Series made its way to North America, with fairer, faster racing that was not at all safer with the sketchy road conditions and fog that was so thick, it made descents turn into trust falls.
